About My Counseling

My counseling approach is client-centered, meaning that you, as my client, are always at the center of the work that we do together. I also use cognitive-behavioral techniques to help undo old, destructive patterns of thinking and replace them with new, healthier ones. I frequently incorporate mind-body practices, such as deep breathing and relaxation, to help you find relief.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Counseling?
Counseling is a dynamic, interactive process where you and I work together to identify the roots of the problems you're experiencing and find healthy solutions to those problems. My focus is always on your comfort and personal growth. I don't tell you what to do or how to "fix" your problems. Instead, I work with you to find solutions and new behaviors that make the most sense for you.

What are the benefits of Counseling?
Possible benefits include:
    * Decreased stress
    * Improved coping skills
    * Decreased depression and anxiety
    * Increased ability to handle challenging situations
    * Better understanding of self
    * Improved relationships
    * Overall improved health and well-being

Is counseling right for me?
Counseling is right for anyone facing challenges. The purpose of counseling is to find solutions to those challenges in order to live a healthier, more satisfying life. We'll work together to examine old patterns of behavior and find new ones that work better for you. By seeing a counselor, you are taking control of your life.

Do I really need counseling? I can usually handle my problems.
Everyone goes through challenging situations in life. Most of us can face those challenges, but sometimes we need a little extra support. The decision to begin counseling doesn't mean you can't handle things. In fact, reaching out for help is a sign of strength. Counseling can help you develop new coping skills and use the ones you already have in more effective ways.

How much does it cost?
My current fee structure is:
Individual Counseling (45-50 minutes): $65
Full-time Students (living independently): $45
Extended Session: (80-90 minutes): $85

A limited number of sliding scale/reduced-rate appointments are available. If money is a concern, please discuss it with me. We will work together to find fee that works best.

Is counseling confidential?
Yes. Everything you share with your counselor is confidential, with a few exceptions, which are mandated by law. Your counselor will have to notify the proper authorities if:
    * The client is at risk or harming self or someone else
    * Abuse of a child or elderly person is suspected

Are you able to prescribe psychiatric medication?
No. Only psychiatrists or other physicians can prescribe medication. Counselors provide talk therapy. If you need a referral to a psychiatrist after our initial appointment, I will be happy to provide one for you at that time.
